Beer coasters for the planet
Honoring the inspiration for a scholarship fund with good times
The David L. Bucknam Memorial Scholarship Fund helps undergraduates in the fields of geology, environmental science, botany, and other environmentally-related fields pursue their dreams of making the planet a better place for everyone and everything. The main fundraising event for the scholarship is held each September, where participants hike, bike, or drive--three of the things the Fund's namesake loved to do--culminating at a Colorado park with burgers, brownies, and beer. In 2011 every donor received a set of beer coasters with the themes of the event prominently featured. The back of each coaster is also different: one presents an overview of the fund, another is a stream-of-consciousness block of prose about backpacking and beer; and so on.
We commissioned Genghis Kern, a letterpress printer in Denver, to produce the finished pieces once they were designed. The two-color, overprinted pieces are a love letter to both the spirit of Dave, and to the humble and awesome genre of beer coaster art.
