Water
quality is a big issue, no matter who you are. As the organization
with ultimate responsibility for the quality of Colorado's water,
the Colorado Department of Health and Environment's (CDPHE) Water
Quality Control Division wanted to make sure everyone understood
what water quality means to them, and what they do to ensure it
remains high.
Notchcode
was charged with creating a design that would convey vital information
about water quality standards, water use, and how the state's water
is distributed geographically, to a wide audience. The booklet was
to be used by 5th-grade classes, city councils, legislators, and
everyday citizens as an overview of these issues.
We
used a part of the Colorado flag on the cover (shown at left), modifying
the bottom blue field (that represents the state's rivers) to show
waves, lapping gently at the red "C". This playful, simple
graphic approach is carried throughout the interior of the booklet,
with factoids about the state's water running, streamlike, along
the bottom of each page (below).
