Tristan

Well, since I named the new Mac Marcel, I figured I'd stay in the Dadaist frame of mind and name the new disks on the server after Man Ray and Tristan Tzara, both great artists, in their own different ways. Man Ray is actually the name of the booting disk for the server (the very one that is hosting this webpage), and Tristan handles my backups. There's another really large disk that I am mirroring all of my job archives onto, but I have yet to find a good name for it. Maybe The Bride Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors, Even.

So, I've got Marcel, as I've chosen to name my new PowerBook G4, up and running. Just a few minor hiccups, but as anyone who works with Macs for 8 hours a day knows, making a transition --even on a Mac-- can be a bit of a chore. After the initial unpacking, there was the migration of all my program and document files over to the Marcel from my old Mac. And then about one GigaByte of software update downloads. And then getting the external monitor to play nice with the video output from Marcel. But it's all in tip-top shape now, and I actually got a little work done.

Initial impressions? It's really fast, at least compared to my 5 year-old PowerBook. And having the video memory available to power both Marcel's screen and the external monitor (and have them not mirror each other) allows me to have e-mail, chat, etc. open on the smaller screen, and keeps my big monitor free for page layout, web code, and branding strategy research.

It's here!

Now all I need is an hour or so to move everything over to it. Tedious, but the fun kind of tedious.

There's a post in Apple's delivery of product: they ALWAYS overdeliver on getting things to you well before their estimated delivery date. I was supposed to have this a week from now, and now it's sitting next to my desk.

Apple does this with repairs, and wait-times on phone service, too. Manage your expectations up front, and always overdeliver, and you'll be on the road for having an evangelist as a customer.

CSS under the XyleScope

A very interesting tool called Xyle Scope caught my attention today. It allows you to examine and play with CSS code--not just on your own sites, but on others' as well.

(It doesn't over-write external CSS code; but just applies your hacks to your cached copy of the internet-based code, BTW)

What are some advantages of this? Well, it lets you see how good code operates on XHTML pages, for one thing. And it allows you to tweak your own code and get it to display the way you want it, all without the drag of saving, clearing a cache, and reloading pages. Even BBEdit can have issues with this, and Xyle Scope seems to help here.

Is it worth the $19.95? You bet. Check it out.
